Posted September 10, 2018 05:04:16 Police in Brentwood, California, said a suspect in a shooting that left a 17-year-old student dead has been taken into custody.
Brentwood police said on Twitter that a person had been arrested at a home in the 1500 block of Ransom Avenue in Brents Grove, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of San Francisco.
The Brentwood Police Department tweeted that a weapon had been recovered from the scene.
The Brentwood News tweeted that the teen was in critical condition and undergoing surgery.
Police said the shooting happened shortly before 8:30 a.m. local time.
A Brentwood police officer was shot and wounded in the leg during the shooting.
No officers were injured in the incident, according to police.
San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr said officers responded to the scene and “received reports of a man armed with a firearm.”
He said that the suspect was in custody.
The shooting was not considered a hate crime, he said.
Authorities are investigating.
There are about 2,500 residents in Brentford, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) northwest of San Diego.
